Summary:The origin and continuity of complex temperature profiles observed in the Chukchi Sea as part of the MIZPAC 71 program was investigated. The positive temperature anomalies, termed mesostructure elements, were found to have their heat source in the warm coastal current. Interleaving coupled with mixing in the marginal ice zone due to ice protuberances was found to account for the temperature features observed. Particular mesostructure elements were traces for several km. The deeper structure was found to occur in some association with a rhythmic deepening of constant density surfaces, possibly due to tidal influence.
