Summary:One of the key cultural phenomena that marked the phenomenon of cultural renaissance in mass culture was cinema. It is noteworthy to draw parallels between cultural processes by analyzing the “movie booms†that have taken place within a century. These are parallels between the "Russian Hollywood" of the early 20th century and the Yakut “Sakhawood†of the first quarter of the 21st century. The parallels do not seem to be strained due to taking into account the cultural dynamics, that is, the perspective of survival of the national in the atmosphere of the mass culture of modernity. At the same time, the method of prolonging ethno-national symbolic constructs in cinematography, which has fallen into the arms of mass culture, whose symbolic status is not high, becomes problematic.The purpose of the paper is to reflect the contradictory structures of cinema, reducing the rank of the symbolic to the iconic. To achieve this goal, the tasks were set to show the difficulty in expressing the national character of the creators of cinema, using the historical example of Russian cinema in exile. Another task is to broadcast the Russian cultural topos in the European and North American film production, as well as draw parallels between the tasks of Russian foreign cinema at the beginning of the 20th century with the cultural tasks of modern national cinema of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).The ontological explication and comparison of these cinematic phenomena leads to an understanding that they are based on the way of survival of national culture in the conditions of a powerful mass culture pressure, and the cultural renaissance is seen as a synthesis of modern metaphysics and national folklore-religious symbolism of pre-modern times. The author concludes that the cinema, finalizing the renewal of culture, is not capable of becoming an effective institution that preserves the national peculiarity of culture.
