Summary:A strong positive correlation 99% is found between the April Sea Surface Temperature (SST) in the region EQ-5N, 85E-95E and the All India Annual Rainfall (AIAR), while a negative correlation 95% is identified between June SST in the region 5S-EQ, 85E-95E and the Indian South West Monsoon Rainfall (ISWMR). The SST's in the Grid could be used to predict the AIAR and the ISWMR prior to 8 and 3 months respectively. This grid has been specifically chosen since a Twin gyre system, recently discovered (Rahul, 2003) forms here, every year prior to the monsoon. The IITM rainfall series and Global Sea Ice Sea Surface Temperature (GISST) are used in this study.
