Summary:Monument base, showing one of four relief panels; Paul Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve (February 15, 1612 – September 9, 1676) was a French military officer and the founder of Montreal, along with Jeanne Mance. He was born into the aristocracy in Neuville-sur-Vanne in Champagne, France. He was the leader of the colonists, sent by a missionary society, who founded Montreal (Ville-Marie), in 1641. The French crown assumed control in 1663, and Maisonneuve was recalled to France in 1665. The statue commemorates Maisonneuve's defense of the colonists against the Iroquois.
