Description
Summary:Thesis (M.A.)--Memorial University of Newfoundland, 2002. Anthropology Bibliography: leaves 149-156 This thesis present the results of several seasons of fieldwork at the Dorset Palaeoeskimo site at Point Riche, Newfoundland. It includes a detailed description of two months of fieldwork that was conducted by the author in 2001 to gain additional data required In the analysis of the site. This included an integrated geophysical and topographic survey and the excavation of a house depression. This evidence is considered along with data from two depressions previously excavated by M. A. P. Renouf, Memorial University of Newfoundland in the analysis and interpretation of the site. It is proposed that variability between the dwellings architecture and artefact distributions is the result of a) the original misinterpretation of a midden-filled depression as a dwelling and b) changes in the Dorset Palaeoeskimo settlement and subsistence pattern towards the end of their occupation of the peninsula.
