Summary: | Francis McCanning, a foreigner, brought a girl to Newfoundland to be his servant. He was enraged when the servant, Mary Nugent, revealed that she was going to marry. McCanning shot Nugent dead, and he was sentenced to be hung. Because he was a Roman Catholic, the sentence was fixed soon, in the winter. God met McCanning after his execution and had him placed among the angels (or aged?). The events occurred in 1899. The song was composed by Garfield Barry of Southeast Bight (Val Berry). |
