Description
Summary:A text set to a Shaker hymn-tune, which sets forth the basic facts of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, calling him, "the Lord of the Dance". Used as "chapel song" in Anglican-sponsored girls' camp. Text composed in 1070's? by Sidney Carter? to the old Shaker hymn-tune "Simple Gifts", which had already been borrowed by Aaron Copeland for use in his "Appalachian Spring". Became widely popularized throughout England and North America. MS (p. 31) states: "This song was sung at Mint Brook before it was recorded. I think it first came in 1970."
