Summary: | A humourous song telling of how a rat (in this case, a mouse) drinks spilled liquor off the floor, gets drunk and belligerent, and eventually is eaten by the cat he has been taunting. The moral is never take a drink "on the house". Used as "camp-fire" song at Anglican Girls' Camp. Indexer first heard this song from her grandfather (raised in Iowa) in the 1940's. Indexer's mother also cites the song from her childhood. Indexer also own phonograph record of song by Doc Watson on Vanguard, recorded in 1960's. Indexer's family's song ends with rat roaring: "Bring on the god-damned cat!" (in other words - no moral). Indexer also recalls having seen song in print, but memory is unclear as to source.
