Summary: | A call-and-response song describing why heaven is unattainable by various (specified) means. Probably originally a spiritual; now primarily used by North American adolescents. The methods for getting to heaven are innumerable and usually silly. Here is characterized as "camp-fire" song from Anglican girls' camp. MS (p. 17) gives total of four verses then states "there are at least 25 alternate verses". Indexer learned this song from her mother in about 1952. Both were California natives. The song was sung in Oregon in the 1950's as well. Singers frequently made up verses as the song was sung. The usual 1st verse was: "Oh, you can't get to heaven on roller skates, you'll roll right past the pearly gates". |
