Summary:On the back of the bracket supporting the steering wheel shaft is stencilled 188. This was the yard number of the ship. All the vessel's auxiliaries were electric, so the steering gear was not steam driven and it was likely a manual chain linked mechanism. Also, the vertical sliding wheelhouse windows of the "railway carriage" type, pulled up and down by the leather strap. -- Ship history: "Eminence," official number 166747, built in Aberdeen and registered at Rochester in 1945, motor vessel, 555 gross tons. Originally owned by the London & Rochester Co., Ltd. Sold in 1967 to North Atlantic Bulkcargoes Ltd., Rochester/Carbonear, Newfoundland, and renamed "Elizabeth". Sold again in 1981 and registered at George Town, Cayman Islands. In 1983, the vessel was reported as "Broken up in the Caribbean", and in 1992, it was deleted from Lloyd's Register as "existence in doubt". Cataloguer's title. The Rorke Family Photograph Collection contains 301 black and white and 28 colour photographs of the Rorke Family of Carbonear, Newfoundland, as well as the Forward and Bemister families from that area who are linked to it by marriage. Although spanning from the 1840s-1970s, most photos are from 1900-45, showing family events, homes and Newfoundland and Labrador locations. There is also an album of photos taken while James Rorke attended the Leys School in Cambridge, England.
