Description
Summary:Captain Mark Forward's home, known as the ''Synagogue'' to people in Carbonear, with a large tree and white picket fence in the front. Note on the back of the photograph reads,"Captain Mark Forward's home, our grandfather, where my father [Ernest Edward Forward] and your father were born, and where we were also born, Ernestine, Hilda, & me (Kathleen)." Capt. Mark William Forward (1816-1887), son of George and Susanna (Taylor) Forward of Carbonear, was born at Carbonear on 6 June 1816. He married Mary Bemister, daughter of William Willis Bemister, on 6 June 1844 in Carbonear. They had 8 children together, including Ernest Edward Forward, Anne Charlotte ''Annie'' (Forward) Boone, John ''Jack'' Bemister Forward and Georgina Eliza ''George'' (Forward) Samways. Mark was captain of the vessel ''William''. He died in Carbonear on 12 January 1887. The Rorke Family Photograph Collection contains 301 black and white and 28 colour photographs of the Rorke Family of Carbonear, Newfoundland, as well as the Forward and Bemister families from that area who are linked to it by marriage. Although spanning from the 1840s-1970s, most photos are from 1900-45, showing family events, homes and Newfoundland and Labrador locations. There is also an album of photos taken while James Rorke attended the Leys School in Cambridge, England.
