Description
Summary:James Addy Rorke laying in his casket in a home before his funeral. Caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Died April 22nd/18 Buried April 25th/18." James Addy Rorke (1845-1918), son of Carbonear merchant Hon. John Rorke was born on 3 August 1845. He joined his father's firm, John Rorke and Sons Limited, with his brother John in 1880 and they assumed control of it following the death of their father in 1896. He married Mary Woodly Wilcox on 1 January 1885, and had five children: three daughters (two of whom died as infants) and two sons, John and James. He died on 22 April 1918. The Rorke Family Photograph Collection contains 301 black and white and 28 colour photographs of the Rorke Family of Carbonear, Newfoundland, as well as the Forward and Bemister families from that area who are linked to it by marriage. Although spanning from the 1840s-1970s, most photos are from 1900-45, showing family events, homes and Newfoundland and Labrador locations. There is also an album of photos taken while James Rorke attended the Leys School in Cambridge, England.
