Summary:The tradition of bark tanning and the use of bark mixtures for the preservation of textiles has a long history in Newfoundland and Labrador. This article traces the linguistic history of the verb form of the word bark, the use of bark as a preservative and colourant, describes the process involved in the creation of tanned materials in both an Indigenous and settler context, and explores how the old tradition of bark tanning or barking is finding new life in the province.
