| Summary: | Root cellar owned by Bill Lamswood on St. Thomas’ Line, Portugal Cove -St. Phillips. The cellars is located in the barn and enter through a hatch entrance. It is roughly 2.5m x 4m. It has built in pounds and is used even today for the storage of potatoes, carrots, turnip, and cabbage. It was built in the 1850’s by Richard squires. The cellar has been in continuous use since it was built and only undergone minor renovations. These renovations included a small extension, and adding concrete to the stone walls in 1956. The barn above the cellar is used for miscellaneous garden and household storage. Barn has a second floor which at one time was used to store hay. Hatch is made of chicken wire which serves as the only ventilation. Originally it had a wooden chimney like structure that went through the two stories of the barn for ventilation.
