Lewis has one child, Bruce, who is a teacher and owns a store called the 'This and That' store in the Town of Fogo. Lewis' brother is Stewart Payne, the bishop. Bessie has eight children: six boys and two girls.

Summary:At 16 or 17 years of age Lewis Payne started fishing. He did this for five summers then joined a coal boat. He was in a shipwreak off the Madeleine Islands and had to row 15 miles to Cape Breton. He then came back to Fogo and joined another freight boat. He worked on a long liner for 10 summers. He also worked at the fish plant for 3-4 summers and then retired. Lewis then gets out his book of poetry.
