Lewis has one child, Bruce, who is a teacher and owns a store called the 'This and That' store in the Town of Fogo. Lewis' brother is Stewart Payne, the bishop. Bessie has eight children: six boys and two girls.

They would walk down to Seldom-Come-By from Stag Harbour for various parties and gatherings. There would be church events with supper, for example. They would have dances, although not on Sundays, on nights after the church sale (garage sale). Lewis says that they would walk to Seldom-Come-By from the Town of Fogo in the morning and back again at night. They might also go by bike or dog team.
