Summary:Ann Hogan talks about her early life in Gull Island. She discusses her large family and her school life. She also talks about the special holidays they used to celebrate, and about a home remedy they used for a cough and a cold. 00:07-02:28 born and raised in Gull Island, went to Bell Island and Carbonear in different times of her life, in 19 years old she got married, she had sixteen children, thirty-six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, she have ten girls and six boys, two boys and her husband have passed away; 02:31-04:57 she went to Toronto to meet her boys, she is still living in the same house in Gull Island where she and her husband used to live, she has eleven sisters and two brothers, most people did fishing and farming at that time, they had their own cattle like hens, sheep, horses, pigs, cows; 05:03- 08:38 she attended two schools, there were nuns in her school, she had a favorite teacher who was from Carbonear, then people would not have much money, she baked six loads each day, they bought groceries from one store close to their community, they grew cabbage, they had to go to Carbonear sometimes to buy clothes, her mother could not do sewing, she can knit some clothing like sweaters, socks for her children; 08:49- 09:36 she and her family used to eat fish and potatoes on Monday, peas and cabbage on Tuesday, they had soups on Wednesday, other days they used to eat beans, and sometimes meats, on Some Sundays she used to make cakes; 09:45-10:34 they used to enjoy Good Friday and Easter Sunday, they visited people’s houses and had drinks during Christmas; 10:51- 15:10 castor oil was used to treat cough and cold, they had to go somewhere by horse and carts, they went to dances and enjoyed kitchen parties, few people used to play fiddles, she loved to listen ghost stories from others; 15:19-15:31 thanking Hogan and end of the interview.
