Description
Summary:During the Depression, residents were encouraged to clear land and were given a small government bonus for each acre cleared. Packie (Patrick) Power (1893-1965) cleared land above the Wester Cove, close to the Knap. This land became known as Packies Bonus. Not far from Packies Bonus, Ben Power (1868-1936) and his sons cleared land to grow potatoes and this land became known as Bens Bonus. While the Flats add a fair amount of agricultural land, the hill slopes around Branch provide better drainage and are better suited for growing vegetables such as potatoes.
