He also talks about his early introduction to socialism as a youth. He discusses the Cooper's Union and the Mechanic's Society and how he joined the Liberal Party. Smallwood speaks of his time in New York and some of the people he met there while attending various lectures. He also speaks of some of the schools he attended in St. John's as a child.
