Sailing ships from Europe aimed at making land at Baccalieu because that par- ticular locality could be recognized even in the fog by immense hordes of Puffins off-shore. So important was this landmark to become that it eventually became a crime, punishable by a public whipping, to molest those nesting sea-birds.
