Description
Summary:bultow n Another change came in the 1850's when some of the vessels began to fish with a "_bultow_," or _line trawl_, a long line with a series of baited hooks attached at intervals. Now instead of working a few handlines with perhaps a dozen baited hooks, a fisherman could set a bultow with several hundred baited hooks. The gear had been developed by the Dutch in 1770, and was then taken up by the French, who gave it to the Americans. At first, the bultow was set from the mother ship but soon the dories were put to use to set the gear and haul it back. a long line with a series of baited hooks attached PRINTED ITEM G. M.
