Summary: | birch did not collect dirt, such as manure, too easily as did store bought deck brooms. A birch broom was made by cutting small elder "_gads_", binding them together by interweaving other elder gads, trimming off the bottom, and driving a handle made from "var" (fir) stick, which had the bark removed from it, into this bundle.
