Summary:box n Most of my informants can remember when ironing was done with a "box iron". This was wedge-shaped and hollow./ Special heaters were placed in the fire till they got red hot. Then, by means of tongs, they were placed in the box iron and the shutter which could be lifted up and down was closed. There were generally two heaters with the box iron. While one was being used the other was getting hot. 9 9 Informant No. 14 showed me the "box iron" which her mother used in the early 1900's. There is also a "box iron" on display in the Provincial Museum, Duckworth St. St. John's.
