Summary: | time n In the outports of Newfoundland, a social event is often called "a time". The time is usually held in the church hall of the community on a Saturday night. It includes dancing and drinking. In the old days - 1940-1950s there was usually a band with Newfoundland as well as country and western music. A large portion of the enter- tainment however was supplied by the "old timers" of the community singing the Newfoundland folksongs to the accompaniment of an accordion or a fiddle. Liquor was a big thing on these occasions and was often the start of a "bender" lasting a few days to a week. This was a bunch of men going around from house to house drinking and entertaining.
