Summary: | winter n . . . winter 'dieters' or 'winter men,' as they were referred to. A 'dieter' was a man who fished in the summer, and in the absence of employment in the winter, joined a household on an informal basis. In many cases, if a dieter had been a shareman, he might remain with his crew skipper for the duration of the winter. Besides providing his own provisions, he would usually join his hosts in their winter's round of activites: cutting wood for fuel, fencing and construction purposes, trapping/game for their furs, hunting for food, and so on.
