Summary:white a and in the water. It was an old beaver-house,and I sat down on the top,and heard the old man hold forth, while we munched biscuits and smoked turn about. Opposite to us was a second house,and at the end of the lake, in a flat meadow covered with rank green grass a yard long, was the top of a third house, now building. It was on an island in a creek, and could not be reached without a boat. All round us, in the soft turf of the banks, were beaver-roads : canals, a foot wide, dug into the land ten or twenty yards, and ending in a path cleared to the trees. The canal had fur- nished mud for the house,the path was the road for food and timber, and food and timber were piled on the house. The food is 'white wood' and birch, about a couple of inches thick. The branches had been neatly nibbled into portable lengths, and they were piled on a turf opposite to the house.
