Summary: | teak n The tecks of Bishop's cove and Upper Island cove, Conception bay in the early twentieth century were quite different from the mummers who went through the community during the Christmas season. Tecks were only visible on the twelfth day of Christmas. They were dressed quite normal, with the exception that they wore an article like a towel, or a scarf on their person. Unlike mummers, they never had their faces disguised. They consisted mainly of the male sex who strolled through the community, and if thay saw anyone not dressed like them, they would catch them and beat them with a stick, or a whip. In a sense the Tecks made up a small social group who combined to discipline those who did not dress for the occasion.
