| Summary: | train 2 n Cod-liver oil was second only to stockfish as an important product of the Hanseatic league. The product was dark-colored and evil-smelling and was used not only by tanners but also in oil lamps. It was called "train oil," said to be a corruption of the term, "_tran_ oil," from the Germanic word _tranen_ (tears). This was in reference to the "tears" of oil that dripped from the rotting livers. The train oil lamps were black iron trays with a wick hanging out of each corner; they gave/out only a pale light, smoked badly, and must have smelled abominably. PRINTED ITEM G.M.
