Summary: | western a The charter of 1634 is known as ''the first Western Charter'' to distinguish it from a similar patent issued by Charles II in 1661 and the amended patent of 1676. Just when the West Country agents applied for it is uncertain, but their request was probably brought to the attention of the officials at Whitehall in December, 1633, or early in January, 1634. The agents of Plymouth, Dart-/mouth, and Barnstaple were the only western representatives at the London hearings, but the communities which they represented had probably furnished them with instructions to try to procure royal confirmaton.
