Description
Summary:roller 1 n Indispensable to Banks fishermen were the roller and the runner. The roller, a circular shaped block of lignum vitae wood. .has a hole bored in the center of its flat surface, which enables it to be suspended from an iron rod between the ears of a galvanized iron frame. The two merge below the roller to form a single staff which is inserted into a hole in the dory's gunnel a short distance aft of the stemhead. The roller which revolved freely on its shaft is deeply grooved completely around the center of its edge. The main trawl line is placed in this groove when fishermen are hauling or underrunning a fleet of gear. DNE Sup PRINTED ITEM [Add to DNE roller n 3, to 1971 cite] Cross-ref to _runner_ G. M.
