Summary:rock n In First Spring on the Grand Banks, John and Meg have an adventure which starts when Canso's father dies and his schooner is seized for debts. The trio escapes with the vessel to Tower Rock, a Newfoundland outport, where a friend offers to help Canso earn the money to pay off the debts. Some of the words Freeman uses are not common to Newfoundland, for example "outporters". The ex- pression should be outharbour men and women. Freeman encourages the notion that Newfoundland merchants kept the fishermen in poverty from which there was never an escape.
