Summary:up av, prep Before beginning the game proper, it was first decided how many "allies" would be "_up_" (thrown) - usually no more than two or three, often one. Then it was decided if it would be "mat's alive" or "mat's dead". "Mat's alive" meant that if the first "allie" thrown got into the "mat" the person could claim a number of "allies" then, "mat's dead" _ "allies" could be claimed only when "flicked" in, not thrown. Each child would then take his turn in throwing the "allies" towards the "mat". The one who go closest then had the chance to get all the "allies" in. If two players' allies "kissed" - or hit each other - they were taken up and thrown again. The player, crawling, "flicked" the allies with a crooked index finger toward the "mat" (beginning with the nearest.
