Description
Summary:pregnant See 'tubbed up', 'fixed off', 'in the family way' 'knocked up', 'up the spout', 'three sails in the wind', 'fell over the broom stick', [The word Pregnant is relatively new and I never heard it used in folk speech until about ten years ago. My mother used to tell her neighbour that "Mrs. Smith was like it again", or "Did you hear that Mrs. Smith was in the family way again?" When Mrs. Smith was well advanced in her pregnancy somebody would say, "she is as big as a barrel", or "she is as big as she can tumble". .the less sophisticated would say "she is fixed up", or move vulgarly "she is knocked up". -Marcus Hopkins, 70-15/145] Not used Not used Withdrawn
