Description
Summary:patent n If sails were white they were dipped in a solution of lime and pickel but if they they were dark they were put in a special substance known as Patenbark. This was bought in St.John's each previous spring, and was in solid form, and the men melted it down in large barkpots and put it on the sails. This solution was also put on twine and on traps used by the fisher- men. The purpose of both the lime and pickel, and the Patenbark was to keep the fishing gear and sails from rotting or decay.
