Description
Summary:barm 34 _OLD FASHIONED WHITE BREAD_ Steep out hops & use 2 cups 5 tsp. salt 1/4 melted butter or of the liquid. 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 other shortening 1 cup lukewarm water 10 to 12 cups sifted all 1 tsp. sugar purpose flour 2 cups scalded milk The hops grow on a vine. When they have been steeped, the liquid is used for yeast to make a batter called Barm. Let it rise. Make a hole in the flour and pour in butter, milk, sugar, salt & mix all together, same as other bread making. "The history of the recipe goes back to the time before yeast was used in Newfoundland for making bread. It made lovely bread. The hops had to be picked and tied up in the store for winter ."
