Summary:punt n Up until about 1880 the boats used by the first settlers [in Placentia Bay] were from five to seven quintals capacity. They were called punts and were manned by two men. They were open boats with the center part of the boat covered with boards called gang boards laid on the thwarts. There was a place in the aft and forward part of the boat called standing rooms for the fishermen to stand in when fishing. The boats were equipped with three sails, mainsail and jib.
