Summary:Newfoundlandiana V. "NEWFOUNDLANDIA" "Newfoundlandia": Why? The question posed by this unit is simply: What aspects of Newfoundland environment, language, life, and literature lend themselves to individual and small group activities and projects through which one can focus on English skills and at the same time develop an awareness of Newfoundland? Because of historical and geographical factors, Newfoundland has a rich linguistic heritage. Early settlement meant the "transplanting" of English and Irish dialects of a period unusually early as Canadian communities go. In addition, the separation of the widely-scattered fishing villages fostered the development of local speech. Linguistically, Newfoundland has a variety of usages, a rich vocabulary (both general and occupational), distinctive idioms and figures of speech, some different pronunciations, and a variety of place and family names. (over) Newfoundland has a body of literature - novels, poems, stories, essays, chronicles, legends, folklore, ballads. Newfoundland has its music and songs; its artists and art work. Above all, Newfoundland has an environment that offers varied and unique experiences. It has both a stable and changing environment that have brought from many sensitive people, working through a variety of modes, very definite statements on the human experience and the changing quality of life in Newfoundland.
