old The hoods, for their first four years, are "young hoods," "bedlamers," "curriers" and "old hoods." And"old dog hoods" or "old bitch hoods" they remain. Like the harps, they are hair seals, not fur seals. The bag of tough, hard skin on the dog hood's nose is an extraordinary object. When blown up, it protects the dog at his most vulnerable point.
