Summary:night In St. John's, along some streets sewage receptacles were placed at intervals of a few hundred yards; they were simply large earthenware pipes up-ended above gratings that led to the sewe pipe underground.People carried buckets of sewage to these hoppers last thing at night before going to bed or first thing in the morning before going to work. On streets where there were no hoppers . . . there were the night-carts - horse-drawn carts followed by two men who would pick up the buckets of "night soil placed in from of each house and empty them into the carts. The night carts started to come along around midnight, and they carried oil-fed torches which gave off a flare of light and much smoke. PRINTED ITEM G. M.
