| Summary: | Newfoundland During the first half of the seventeenth century they [the London merchants] made persistent efforts to dominate them [the transatlantic fisheries]. The first enterprise of this character which affected Newfoundland was the plantation scheme undertaken by the London and Bristol, or Newfoundland, Company, which was chartered in 1610. This joint-stock organization, composed of merchants of London and Bristol, with a sprinkling of nobles and gentry, sent out a number of settlers under the leadership of John Guy, a Bristol merchant, in 1611.
