nitch METHOD OF TALLYING. At Twillingate in the old days when a lot of people couldn't write, anyone bringing boughs in to Ashburn's or Earle's [merchants] would count them by "_NITCHES_" [PT] and there was a rhyme which indicated how many groups of two made up a "nitch." [I was unable to note down the rhyme but-it went something like: 'TWO, and another two and two more . . . makes a "nitch". The elements were counted in groups of two, and four or five (?) of these dual elements made up a "nitch."] METHOD OF TALLYING. Yes DICT CEN.
