Description
Summary:boo n _beggar_. _Bull-bear_ is defined as: "A spectre, bogey; a scare-crow; a bugbear, or object of groundless terror." The complex problems of the _boo_/_bogey_ group and its etymologies, however, are again illustrated by the fact that _bull-bear_ also is of uncertain derivation, like its cognate _bugbear_. The development of the figure is further confused by the fact that the predominant pronunciation in Newfoundland is ['bu: ,baeger] which suggests that the second element of the compound may have been confused with the root _bag_,87 although the /E/ and /ae/ phonemes in Newfoundland sometimes appear liable to confusion as _bag_ may be pronounced [baeg], [be:g] or [beig].88 Yes (cont'd card (b) Used I and Sup Used I and Sup 4 Not used This is the reverse of B_4891.
