Summary:seal n The Seal Fishery is Carried on all over this Countrey as I have not before mentioned it I will give a short account of the manner in/ which it is Carried on (over) [reverse] THE VOYAGE OF NEWFOUNDLAND 104 which is Carried on [Verso of p. 103] The Kinds of Seals Taken I can give a Very Imperfect account of having it only from the Fishermen as the most of them are only seen in winter they divide them into five sorts[S]141[S] which they Call Square Phipper Hooded Seal Heart or houke Bedlamer & harbour seal which Last stays in the Countrey all the year & is the Common in Europe the [i]Phoca Vitulina[i] of Linnaeus their Descriptions of the others are as follows square Phipper they say is the Largest sometimes weighing 500 weight as they tell you rough like an English Water Dog the hooded Seal differs from the rest by a white hood or peice of Moveable Skin upon his head which he can at Pleasure throw over his nose & and with it defend himself from the Blows of the Fishermen who cannot Kill him till they remove it-the Heart or Possibly Harp Seal is markd over the Shoulders with a brown figure rudely resembling a harp which they Call the Saddle the Bedlamer Quite dusky without any mark they themselves tell you that the Bedlamer is the young harp they have also another sort which they say [verso of p. 104] never Exceeds two feet or two & and a half in Length PRINTED ITEM DNE-cit W.
