Description
Summary:snub A sure sign for a good fishing season was the catching of a '_snubbie_'[PT]. A snubbie is a cod fish which seems to have its face pushed in or else partly cut off ( see diagram ). [image] - ordinary cod [image] - snubbie [over] [reverse] It was quite unusual to catch one of these; perhaps one would be caught every couple of years. The practice was to keep the head, clean it and hang the head over the splitting table in the stage for the entire summer. This was suppose to bring at least 100 quintals to the crew or man that caught it. When my uncle was explaining this he was careful to imply that this practice was only carried on by the older fishermen like his father. In the course of showing the unreliability of the practice he admitted that he practiced it himself as recently as ten years ago.
