The squid, thinking the lure is some helpless prey, grab the jig and are caught. There is almost a carnival atmosphere when a school of squid is sighted in a bay or cove, and the men of the fishing hamlet go out in their dories--"all kinds of figgers with _squid lines_ and jiggers"--to catch the bait.
