Summary:smoky a . "Smokey Jack," an object which was frequently used to stop blood. This object was found in the marshes. It was a type of brown spongy ball and very soft. When one squeezed it a smoke would come from it, for this reason it was given the name "Smokey Jack". He placed the object over the toes and pressed it on tightly. It stuck to the toes and stopped the flow of blood rather quickly. It also kept our infection. [p. 23] . Smokey Jack was also used to stop blood. These were a soft fluffy ball with a thin skin; they were found in marches [sic]; these would be pressedon a wound, and would [over] [reverse] stop the flow of blood very quickly. This was the thing used when someone got a big cut. It was used as a blood stopper and a cleanser, for it sealed the wound, keeping out infection.
