Without such collections of sermons, usually provided by the minister, the lay-reader who "took the service" in the absence of the minister, preaching at the other churches on his circuit, would not have been able to provide a sermon for his congregation. Sometimes these were collections of sermons by one person, Spurgeon, Fosdick, or the like; sometimes "anthologies" of sermons by various preachers.
