Description
Summary:sermon n The "sermon book"was a very familiar piece of essential equipment of Methodism in the Newfoundland outport when I was a boy and probably still is in the United Church in the outport. Without such collections of sermons, usually provided by the minister, the lay-reader who "took the service" in the absence of the minister, preaching at the other churches on his circuit, would not have been able to provide a sermon for his congregation. Sometimes these were collections of sermons by one person, Spurgeon, Fosdick, or the like; sometimes "anthologies" of sermons by various preachers.
