Description
Summary:shorten v Babies were dressed in long clothes, well beyond their feet. When the mother held the baby in her arms its clothes fell nearly down to the ground, I think. Then at a certain age [in months] it was "shortened", that is, was dressed in clothes which came only to the ankles or feet. Being an only child I never had anything much to do with babies, and the above are only impressions, but I do know they wore "belly-bands" of flannel, and "barrows" of flannel, and fine cotton or lawn long slips, with lace on them, and then a long dress. I'll ask a few people about " the shortening" bit. People would ask - "When are you going to shorten the baby?' Meaning dressing it in shorter garments. info please JH.
