Description
Summary:bat n The berth money [in 1842] had been raised by the merchants and owners of vessels to three pounds, and three pounds ten shillings currency for "batmen", and one pound for bow or chief gunner, who had hitherto gone free. Some of the parties committed a trifling breach of the peace and were imprisoned for a short time; the berth money, however, was lowered, to two pounds for batmen, one pound ten shillings for after gunner, and the bow gunner free as before. The batman is the person who kills the seal with a long handled gaff similar to a boat hook. PRINTED ITEM DNE-cit GMS Sept 74 Used I and Sup Used I and Sup 2 Used I
